La Escocesa

La Escocesa is a former industrial complex located in the district of Poblenou, Barcelona. The development was initially dedicated to the production of chemical products for the textile industry, and dates back to 1852. Since 1999 it has become a creation space and meeting point for artists, which had previously been in short supply in Poblenou and other parts of the city. Hundreds of artists and craftspeople from different disciplines have since worked in its facilities.

In 2006 the real estate company Renta Corporación purchased La Escocesa to build offices and homes and the artists were evicted from the factory, which was left completely empty by the end of 2007. The same year the Barcelona City Council approved a plan for the renewal of La Escocesa, which was catalogued as Industrial Heritage. Two of the buildings in the complex, a total of 2400m2 of the factory, were established as devoted to public use. In the Strategic Cultural Plan of Barcelona, 2006, the 'Factories for Artistic Creation' programme included La Escocesa as part of the project.

In early 2008, the City Council gave provisional management of space to La Associació d'Idees, a group of artists from different disciplines with a long history of regular work in the factory. These same artists are currently continuing their project of the self-management of the space by offering studios for artists at a low cost, and by organizing activities in the neighbourhood. Barcelona City Council is currently working on an architectural project for the refurbishment of the space.

Mission

La Escocesa, as a centre of artistic production, commits to offer resident artists different spaces and services at affordable prices (workshops, multi-purpose rooms, production materials, promotion and international exchanges), thereby facilitating their professional development and improving their artistic career.

Vision

La Escocesa is a centre of artistic production focused on the visual arts. It is public-minded and self-managed.

The Associació d'Idees

The Associació d'Idées (Association of Ideas) is a non-profit organisation that has been responsible for the management of La Escocesa since early 2008. By applying a model of self-management, each artist is integrated into the centre as a partner for a fee of 100 euros per month.

Chronology:
On January 16 2008 Barcelona City Council delivers the keys to building ‘B’ of La Escocesa to the collective for its use as an area of artistic creation for a renewable period of one year. From the first moment, the Associació d'Idées develops the maintenance work of the factory complex. In the primary phase, La Associació begins to work on cleaning up the ground floor of the building. The reconditioning work is tough, because the area is full of junk and rubbish. Once it has been emptied, the Associació builds partition walls to create separate workspaces for artists. After the construction of the internal staircase to access the second floor, by the City Council, the same process is performed on the upper level. After six months, the space is transformed thanks to the work of the artists themselves and the income generated by La Escocesa.

In the months of January, May and November 2009 there are public calls on the website of La Escocesa to fill the empty studios. Artists are selected by external jurors in order to guarantee transparency and independence.

Currently La Escocesa has 23 workshops in operation, of 25 and 30m2 at a price of 100 euros per month. There are more than 30 artists working in its facilities.

Internal Organisation of La Escocesa

The Associació d' D'idees is currently composed of all the artists that have a studio in La Escocesa, as well as a cultural promoter.

The Board of Directors is renewed annually by vote in an Assembly. At the present time the members of the Board are:

President: Véronique Serfass
Secretary: Elva Gigirey
Vice Secretary: Joan-Marc Batlle
Treasurer: Plácido Romero
Member: Pamela Martínez
Member: Stephan Guillais
Member: Fabien Perreard

Webmaster: Marco Noris

All decisions are taken by vote in an Assembly or by the Board according to the case concerned.

Objectives

In general terms, the main objectives of the Associació d'Idées are: the allocation of spaces at affordable prices to artists who need it, and the self-management of the space. As specific objectives of the next period of management of La Escocesa, the Associació proposes to:

In addition, all initiatives and proposals beyond the output generated by artists resident in La Escocesa will be promoted and supported by the Associació.

Criteria for Selection of Artists

La Escocesa is a space with a multidisciplinary artistic history. Its workshops have hosted the performing arts, visual arts, circus, and more. At present, although various artistic disciplines co-exist in the same space, La Escocesa tends to focus more and more on the visual arts, on one hand because of the adaptation of the spaces, and on the other, the ecology of the city.

La Escocesa is an artistic project with a public and collective calling. The selection criteria of La Escocesa has always been based on quality and excellence.

In addition, La Escocesa runs a workspace exchange programme with other centres of creation.

Open Calls

Open calls for access to a studio in La Escocesa and for the exchange programs are made public on the website of La Escocesa. On the website are announced the number of spaces available, their characteristics, the time limits for submission, and later, the candidates who have been selected. For each call the Associació d'Idées requires candidates to submit the following documentation:

1. Requested Data:

2. Dossier and CV:

Dossier, biography and trajectory.

The Associació d'Idées manages the workshops with La Escocesa as a public service and understands that, in order to ensure access to the maximum number of artists as possible, use of the studios should be limited in time. The Associació, as interim manager of the space, has an annual lease agreement with the City Council, so stays will be confirmed each year up to a maximum of three years.

Jury

To ensure equal opportunities, the Associació d'Idées appoints four members of an external jury to choose the artists who are vying for the spaces.

Next Open Calls

The call is open throughout the year for access to a workshop on a temporary basis, with residences in the centre available for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 6 months depending on the project. The Associació d'Idees will create, from applications with the required documentation, a list of artists interested in accessing a workshop at La Escocesa. In each call for access to a studio, whether on a temporary basis or for more than 6 months, the jury will choose the artists who will occupy the new spaces. The dates of the calls for access to spaces for more than 6 months will be published periodically, and the deadline for submitting the documentation will stay open for a period of two weeks after its publication.
