The film club is a monthly meeting where we will present a careful selection of films. Each session will include the screening and a vegetarian dinner prepared by a guest artist, inspired by the projected work. Don't miss the last session of the summer film club! 

In the July session we will see the pieces Every Morning, Not All Things That Shine Are Beautiful, Towards the Sun, I Was Grateful the Wind Tore Out My Camera’s Microphone and The Secret Garden by Nour Ouayda.

The pieces will be screened with audio in original version and subtitled in Spanish.

Not All Things That Shine Are Beautiful by Nour Ouayda | 2022 | 5 min

Lebanese artist Farah Awada recorded and filmed in Beirut during its most turbulent and silent moments. This short film synthesizes those moments in a montage that avoids linear narration and is part of the virtual exhibition “Norient City Sounds: Beirut”, curated and edited by Rayya Badran.

You are in the main lobby of the Beirut National Museum. A guard reminds you that you can touch the archaeological objects. A voice in your headphones suggests that you lick the stone. In front of you, a hole in the wall, in the lower left corner of a mosaic. The voice indicates that it was made by a sniper. Out of curiosity you dial 1-9-9-1 to hear the rest of the story.

The inhabitants of a city wake up one morning to discover that never-before-seen trees, plants and flowers have suddenly sprouted up all over the streets and squares. Strange and mysterious events begin to happen, as Camelia and Nahla investigate the origin of these peculiar new creatures.

 

bio

Nour Ouayda is a filmmaker and film programmer. Her films experiment with various forms of fiction-making in cinema. She is a member of The Camellia Committee alongside Carine Doumit and Mira Adoumier, and is on the editorial board of the Montreal-based online film magazine Hors Champ. Between 2018 and 2023, she was partnerships coordinator and then deputy director of the Metropolis Cinema Association in Beirut, where she managed and developed the Cinematheque Beirut project. She also teaches film programming in Beirut.

Elena Maravillas is a multidisciplinary artist. She is interested in how we relate to and inhabit the world, in ecology, care and interspecies communication.
