The film club is a monthly gathering where we will present a carefully curated selection of films. Each session will include a screening and vegetarian snacks prepared by a guest artist, inspired by the film being shown.

At the April session, we will watch Jessica Sarah Rinland’s films Puerta a puerta, Querida Chick, Sol de campinas and Black Pond.

20h

Puerta a puerta by Jessica Sarah Rinland & Luís Arnías | 10 minutes | 2022 | 16 mm digital transfer

A box of symmetrical dimensions is filled with aspirin, canned peaches, toys, cereal, beans, and secondhand clothing. Mr. Mario, from Venus Service Express, picks it up at a doorstep in Boston, USA. The box is stowed among others like a postal Tetris puzzle, and after a long journey, it will arrive in Falcón, Venezuela, at Aunt Maya’s doorstep.

Querida Chick by Jessica Sarah Rinland | 7 minutes | 2021 | Mini DV, 35mm photographs

A film for Chick Strand. Commissioned by the Encargada por el Festival Internacional de Cine Documental Punto de Vista and Garbiñe Ortega «LAS CARTAS QUE NO FUERON TAMBIÉN SON/THE LETTERS THAT WEREN'T AND ALSO ARE»

Sol de campinas by Jessica Sarah Rinland | 26 minutes | 2021 | Digital transfer from 16mm film, 3D-rendered animation

Sol de campinas follows the work of archaeologists who, over the past ten years, have been excavating a ring of mounds surrounding a central plaza in a region now known as the state of Acre, in Brazil. They move from the field to the laboratory, interpreting how the terrain was constructed, what patterns were employed in the use of the land for settlement, and the composition of the remaining anthropogenic soil.

Black Pond by Jessica Sarah Rinland | 42 minutes | 2018 | Digital transfer from 16mm film, 35mm film stills, archive

Black Pond is an odyssey through a common land in southern England, told through the eyes of the members of the Natural History Society who currently occupy it.

21:30h

Snacks & drinks by Carlos Vásquez.

Jessica Sarah Rinland is an Argentine-British filmmaker who creates cinema centered on tactility. Through a meticulous observation of the work of archivists, archaeologists, anthropologists, naturalists, and other professionals, her films explore museum and environmental conservation as a creative process. Natural history and science are recurring themes, as is the use of analog formats, specifically 16mm film. The materiality of celluloid film and the frequent close-ups of hands emphasize the tactile, drawing a comparison between the filmmaker’s work and that of the researchers with whom Rinland often collaborates.

Jessica Sarah Rinland has received numerous awards, including a Special Mention at the Locarno Film Festival for Those That, at a Distance, Resemble Another (2019), and has been the subject of retrospectives at Anthology Film Archives, Doc’s Kingdom, Curtocircuito, LSFF, and the Flaherty Film Seminar.

Carlos Vásquez Méndez is an artist and researcher. He works with film and photography from a documentary and experimental perspective, establishing constant connections between artistic practice, the social sciences, and the analog and digital realms. His areas of interest include historical rewriting, documentary strategy, representations of reality in art, the photo-film record as archival production, and obsolete techniques as an aesthetic-political discourse. He is based primarily in Barcelona and frequently works in Latin America.

Activity coordinated by Catarina Botelho, Carlos Vásquez, Marla JacarillaValentina Alvarado Matos and Elena Maravillas.
