el consultori (open session)

methodologies in artistic practice

In this open session of El Consultori we invite Valentina Alvarado Mato, Marco Noris and Stella Rahola Matutes, three artists with distinct profiles who will share their perspectives on methodologies in artistic work across the different moments of our practice: How do they find inspiration? How do they concentrate? How do they arrive at form? How do they verbalize, present, or explain what they do? How do they stay true to their practice and sustain their careers within the Barcelona art circuit?

Valentina Alvarado Matos (1986, Venezuela) Visual artist and filmmaker. Her work addresses issues related to memory and territory through a dialogue with the materiality of film, paper, voice, and ceramics. Her practice, akin to collage, weaves together reflections on diasporic identity, memory, and landscape. Her work has been exhibited in art centers and museums in Spain and internationally, including La Virreina Centro de la Imagen, California Museum of Photography, V&A Museum, Artium, LIAF Biennial, Viennale, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Los Angeles Forum - 2220 Arts, Conde Duque Madrid, and La Capella, among others. Some of her films are part of collections such as Light Cone, Archivo XCèntric, HAMACA, and Busan Museum of Art.

Marco Noris (Bergamo, Italy, 1971) articulates his practice around memory, landscape, the body, and territory, using walking as a method of research and developing his work through painting, photography, and audiovisual media. He has worked with curators such as Christian Alonso, Alexandra Laudo, Frederic Montornés, Andrea Pacheco González, and Patricia Betancur, among others, and has exhibited in galleries, art centers, and museums in Spain and internationally. He has developed a career linked to institutions, research spaces, and artist residencies. His work is part of the Col.lecció Nacional d'Art Contemporani de la Generalitat de Catalunya.

Stella Rahola Matutes’ practice deals with the creation of places and spatial situational encounters, displaying installations and sculptural pieces that rescue specific discarded materials. The impossibility of including these materials in utilitarian or productive processes due to certain political contexts, situate them on a suspended threshold. Attending to their own agency of transmutability, Stella points towards a state of impermanence and awkward fragility, involving other things and species. The kinships unfolded from these associations, spieling their strengths and affections, expands possibilities that involve an ecological contingency. She has exposed her work both national and internationally and received the Arts Libris Banc Sabadell Award (2024), Visuals Arts Biennal Ricard Camí Award (2022), the A-FAD prize in recognition of her career (2021) and the Vila Casas Foundation Sculpture Award (2021).
